Laboratoire d’Etudes en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiales
LEGOS (UMR 5566) is a "mixed laboratory" comprising personnel from four employing organisations: Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales(CNES), the national research organisations(CNRS, Département des Sciences de l'Univers), the Institut de Recherche pour la Developpement (IRD) and the University Paul Sabatier (UPS). It is one of seven laboratories in the "Observatoire Midi Pyrenees" (OMP).LEGOS has about 100 members: 40 researchers, 20 technicians and 30 postgraduate students and postdoctoral and contract staff. LEGOS is also houses the French Navy hydrographic and oceanographic service(CMO-Toulouse).

The Water Level is defined as the height, in meters above the geoid, of the reflecting surface of continental water bodies. It is observed by space radar altimeters that measure the time it takes for radar pulses to reach the ground targets, directly below the spacecraft (nadir position), and return. Hence, only water bodies located along the satellite's ground tracks can be monitored, with a quality of measurement that not only depends of the size of the water body, but also on the reflecting targets in its surroundings such as topography or vegetation. Water Level is computed as time series over lakes and at the intersections of rivers and the satellite ground tracks.

Altimeter measurements are extracted over each satellite ground track with both a land/water mask and predefined editing criteria on the values of the altimeter range and associated propagation corrections. From these computed along-track water levels, outliers are rejected by Standard Deviation test and an average water level is computed. A final selection step ensures consistency of the most recently computed water level value with the existing water level time series. The input data are the 31 years Top measured by the None sensor.
